Bold headlines often hide hard truths: Bruce Campbell reveals a cancer diagnosis that isn’t curable, and he’s putting his work on hold to focus on treatment.
The Evil Dead icon, 67, shared the news on Monday via X, explaining that his current health challenge is being framed as an “opportunity,” even as he calls the cancer “treatable” rather than curable.
“Hi folks, these days, when someone is having a health issue, it’s referred to as an ‘opportunity,’ so let’s go with that – I’m having one of those,” he wrote.
He added that while the news may shock some, his intention wasn’t to dwell on the diagnosis but to be transparent and keep fans informed.
“I apologise if that’s a shock – it was to me too,” Campbell said, noting he wouldn’t share every detail about his cancer. Nevertheless, he confirmed that his public appearances would be scaled back as he undergoes treatment.
His plan is to prioritize recovery over the summer with the aim of touring his new film, Ernie & Emma, come fall. He explained that treatment needs sometimes clash with professional obligations, and he’s making space for healing.
Campbell stressed that he’s not seeking sympathy or advice by sharing the news; rather, he wants to counter any potential misinformation. He also emphasized his resilience, writing, “Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while.”
He concluded with gratitude to his fans, hoping to see them soon.
About the star: Campbell is best known for embodying Ash Williams in Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead franchise, which launched in 1981, followed by a memorable 1987 sequel. He has also taken on roles behind the camera and is currently involved in writing, starring in, and directing Ernie & Emma, a story about a widowed pear salesman who travels to scatter his wife’s ashes according to her wishes.
In a lighter note from the past, Campbell once joked to Page Six in February 2010 that rumors of Evil Dead 4 were unfounded and that, if it happened, Ash might need a walker by then.
