Kerala Story 2: High Court Stays Release, Censor Board Under Fire (2026)

A major blow has been dealt to the creators of 'The Kerala Story 2' as the Kerala High Court has issued an interim stay on the film's release, scheduled for tomorrow. This decision has sparked a wave of controversy and left many questioning the role of the Censor Board.

'The Kerala Story 2', directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, has been a topic of heated debate since its promotional material was released. The makers claim the film is based on true events, but critics argue it paints an unfair and stereotypical picture of Kerala and its residents.

During a hearing on Thursday, the Kerala High Court considered a petition filed by Sreedev Namboodiri, who argued that the film's UA censor certificate should be revoked. Namboodiri's petition states that the film maligns Kerala and its people.

In a scathing remark, the court criticized the Censor Board for not 'applying its mind' when clearing the film, and directed the board to consider the petitioner's complaint. The court further stated that the film should not be released until all arguments are concluded, as the teaser and trailer have the potential to cause communal disharmony.

Sources have revealed that Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the producer of 'The Kerala Story 2', plans to appeal the Kerala High Court's order in the Supreme Court.

Previously, the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) suggested 16 modifications to the film, which runs for 131 minutes and 24 seconds. The CBFC granted the film a U/A and 16+ certificate. Among the edits, the board requested a 50% reduction in visuals depicting women being slapped, hit, and raped, and a similar reduction in lip-locking scenes.

The film has faced heavy criticism from notable figures, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, actor Prakash Raj, and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. When asked to arrange a screening for the Kerala High Court, the makers of 'The Kerala Story 2' refused.

Besides being labeled as propaganda against the Muslim community, the film is also accused of stereotyping Kerala and its people. The makers have denied targeting Kerala specifically.

This controversy surrounding 'The Kerala Story 2' is not an isolated incident. Its predecessor, 'The Kerala Story', also faced bans in Kerala and West Bengal but went on to win two National Film Awards.

The Kerala Story franchise has a history of stirring up controversy, and this latest development has once again put the spotlight on the role of the Censor Board and the potential impact of films on communal harmony.

What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you think the Censor Board should have a more active role in preventing films with potentially harmful content from reaching the public? Or is it a matter of artistic freedom and individual interpretation? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
