The New York Yankees' Offseason Strategy: A High-Stakes Game
While the Yankees have had a quiet start to the offseason, their rivals are making big moves, leaving fans anxious. But here's where it gets intriguing: the Yankees might just be about to shake things up.
Former Mets GM Steve Phillips hinted on MLB Radio that the Yankees could be ready to spend big on two key positions: starting pitcher and outfielder. The names in the frame? Tatsuya Imai or Michael King for the pitching role, and the ever-popular Cody Bellinger for the outfield.
"It seems they might be willing to go over budget to get one more starter, and they're definitely eyeing Bellinger. If they miss out on him, their strategy might need a rethink..." Phillips commented.
The Yankees' Budget: A Mixed Message?
The Yankees' response to these rumors has been somewhat ambiguous. Hal Steinbrenner, the team's owner, has said that a lower payroll would be "ideal", but he quickly added, "We want a team that can win it all."
General Manager Brian Cashman has confirmed that Steinbrenner hasn't set a hard budget yet for the offseason, leaving the door open for some big-ticket moves, even potentially shocking trades.
According to Spotrac, the Yankees' projected luxury tax payroll for 2025 is $318,095,908, and all three players they're targeting - Bellinger, Imai, and King - come with hefty price tags. The Athletic predicts a $182 million contract for Bellinger, $190 million for Imai, and $75 million for King. That's a lot of money, and it's an either/or situation for Imai and King.
The Starting Pitcher Dilemma
Despite the need for another starter, with several key pitchers injured at the start of the season, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has played down the urgency. Carlos Rodon's recent update on his recovery timeline is promising, but he, along with Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt, will miss Opening Day.
The Mystery Continues
The Yankees have kept everyone guessing, and the next few weeks will reveal if they're willing to take big risks. Will they go all out for these star players, or will they stick to a more conservative approach? Only time will tell.
